Description

Cloutsham Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century, built on the site of an earlier dwelling. It was enlarged in 1869 and partly rebuilt after a fire in 1916. The building is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with plain clay tiles and stone stacks, forming an L-plan layout. The original farmhouse, rebuilt after the fire, runs roughly east-west and features a large 19th-century extension on the south front designed in a Swiss chalet style.

The south front has a gable end with a wooden gallery at the first floor beneath a lower roof. It includes a segmental shingled gable end supported by columns, pierced lattice flat balusters, and curved brackets. There is a large canted bay window on the ground floor and a 20th-century window above. To the left, set back from the main house, is a wing with a gabled block at the junction, showing evidence of a lateral stack and possibly a stair projection, though it has been much altered.

On the right return, there are three gabled dormers at the first floor, and a ground floor four-light ogee-headed window with a date stone reading 1869 set below. The entrance is located at the north-east corner and features a 20th-century door. The farm was enlarged by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and is often mentioned in literature related to stag hunting on Exmoor.
