Description

Doverhay Cottage is a 17th-century cottage that has been altered in the early to mid-20th century. It is rendered over rubble with a thatched roof, overhanging eaves, wrought iron brackets, and stone stacks at the gable ends. The plan suggests it was originally a two-cell structure with a cross passage, which has been extensively modified. There is a brick porch addition on the northeast side that originally connected to Doverhay House, which is adjacent to the north.

The east front of the cottage is two storeys high and features two late 18th to early 19th century leaded iron casements on the right side of the ground floor, which are obscured from the road by a wall. On the left side, there is a 20th-century three-light casement and a canted bay porch made of painted brick with a thatched roof, leading to a 20th-century door on the right.

A red sandstone random rubble wall runs alongside the cottage, creating a continuous curve that leads to the entrance of Doverhay House, with inserted brick jambs for 20th-century double gates. The garden front has been extensively altered and was likely the service end of Doverhay House in the 19th century. The cottage is listed mainly for its contribution to the local street scene.
