Description

The Gables Hotel is likely a 17th-century cottage that has been altered and enlarged in the mid-19th century. It is constructed with rendered rubble, random red sandstone rubble, and brick dressings, with thatched roofs and stone and brick stacks. The original plan probably consisted of three rooms arranged along a cross passage, running east to west, with an L-shaped service wing added to the north-west and a single-bay extension to the north-east. The cottage is in a picturesque style. The east front is one-and-a-half stories high with a 2:1 bay arrangement. It features wooden casement windows with trefoil-headed lights and leading, along with diagonally boarded gables to the dormers and decorative cornices. A three-light gabled dormer is on the left gable end of the original dwelling, with a similar dormer on the right, and a two-light casement in the gable end of the service wing. The ground floor has a projecting four-light bay window on the left and a two-light window on the right, along with a two-light window in the right wing. The left return has an entrance and a three-gabled dormer front with a canted bay window and tiled porch beside a lateral stack. The interior was not inspected. The hotel forms a picturesque group with Doverhay House and Doverhay Lodge, which are located to the south.
