Description
Higher Doverhay Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse that was partly rebuilt and reroofed in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from red sandstone and blue lias random rubble, topped with a triple ridge tile roof. The building features a large lateral stack to the left of the entrance and a stone stack at the right gable end. The layout consists of three cells and a cross passage, with a west extension.
The farmhouse has two storeys and is arranged in a 1:3 bay configuration. To the left of the stack, there is a three-light mullioned window that rises through the eaves. On the right, a three-light leaded iron casement is set below the eaves, followed by two 19th-century two-light casements. The ground floor features a three-light ovolo moulded mullioned window on the left and two windows to the right of a chamfered four-centred doorway, which has a stable-type door. A similar door is located at the rear of the cross passage.
The interior has only been partially viewed but includes a plank and muntin screen and a wooden pane to the left of the cross passage, along with an inserted square-headed doorway. It is said to contain part of a 17th-century scratch moulded bench in the hall against the inner room wall. The outer room is divided by a masonry cross passage wall, which has a heavy peaked door frame leading to a smaller room that contains a stair turret, likely a later addition. The interior also features chamfered beams with step and run-out stops.
