Description

Dover House is a 15th-century farmhouse located on Stow Road. It is a two-storey building with four bays, designed in the Wealden style, featuring jettied ends that project over the street. The structure is timber framed, plastered, and has pargetted decoration on the front, which includes remnants of a comb pattern. Each end of the upper storey displays panels with a simple 'Tree of Life' design. The sides and rear were plastered around 1960. The roof is half-hipped and covered with plain tiles, and there is an internal chimney stack with 20th-century shafts designed in a traditional style.

The ground floor has four cross windows, with the two central windows topped by triangular pediments. The upper storey features four 2-light casements, all fitted with square leading from around 1970, which replaced the original lights while maintaining the same style. The entrance includes a six-panel fielded door. Inside, the house boasts a fine array of medieval and 16th-century features, including a crown-post roof and a carved and moulded ceiling in the hall. The hall and parlour fireplaces have lintels adorned with running leaf designs, and above the hall fireplace, there is a cinquefoil brick arcade. This building is illustrated in Basil Oliver's book 'Old Houses and Village Buildings in East Anglia' and has a detailed account in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology, Volume XXIX, Part 3, from 1964.

Adjoining the west end of Dover House is a high boundary wall that links it with Cyder House. This 19th-century wall is constructed of random flint, with red brick piers and capping, and consists of four bays. The wall is included for its group value with Dover House.
