Description

Halscombe Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was enlarged and likely reroofed in the 18th century. The upper storey end, which has two bays on the right, was rebuilt and the windows were changed in the early 20th century. The building is rendered over rubble and is colour washed at the rear, featuring a bitumen-covered hipped slate roof with large lateral stacks on either side of the entrance and a brick stack rising from the rear outshot. The plan suggests it may have originally been a two-cell and cross passage or a three-cell and cross passage with the inner room rebuilt, and an addition on the left with an outshot at the rear. The farmhouse has two storeys and is laid out in a 2:1:2 bay arrangement with irregularly placed 20th-century windows. The bitumen-covered slate roof connects the external stacks to form a porch, and there is a pointed lancet window on the return of the left stack. The entrance features a six-panel door, while the end bay on the right has a plank door. The interior has been partially observed and includes a four-panel compartment ceiling to the right of the through passage, which may contain other interesting features.
