Description

Woodlands is probably a 16th-century farmhouse, substantially altered in the mid-19th century and again in the mid-to-late 20th century. It is built of rendered rubble with a concrete tile roof. A single lateral stack rises from the north front, while tall stone stacks project from the eaves of extensions situated to the left and right of the lateral stack. The original plan consisted of a three-cell layout with a cross passage facing south, accompanied by a lean-to addition to the west gable end and an outshot in the north-west corner. A staircase is set against the north wall, located behind the original through passage. The south front features a lean-to addition on the left side. The original house is two storeys high with a 3:1 bay arrangement, the end bay set back slightly. The first floor has late 19th-century two-light casement windows. The ground floor includes 20th-century windows in the addition and a plate glass window to the left of two French windows with marginal glazing bars, partially obscured by a concrete tile-roofed verandah. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. The replacement of thatch with concrete tiles following the building's initial listing is considered regrettable. The building is primarily listed for its group value with Wood Tenement to the east, due to the picturesque arrangement of the tall stone stacks and other projections along the road frontage. A photograph of the building is held within the National Monuments Record.
