Description
West Lynch Farmhouse is a late medieval farmhouse that was enlarged in the 16th century and later underwent alterations, including being ceiled and refenestrated in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of roughcast rubble and features a triple ridge tile roof with stone stacks at the left and right gable ends, as well as a large central lateral stack.
The farmhouse has a double-ended open hall house plan, with a solar that appears to be a single storey with a partition, and a stair turret located on the rear elevation. It stands two storeys high with a 2:1 bay arrangement. The first floor has 2-light casements, while the ground floor features 19th-century 2-light trefoil-headed casements. A door has been inserted between the first and second bays on the left side, and the end bay on the right has a 3-light mullioned and transomed window with a depressed 4-centred arched head and floral decoration in the spandrels, which may date from the late 15th to early 16th century. Additionally, there is a wooden lancet with a diamond head at the former stair location on the gable end, along with a semi-circular headed chamfered door frame that holds a ribbed door.
The rear elevation is said to have a similar doorframe with an ogee-headed lancet leading to the remains of the stair turret. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain five pairs of cruck trusses and remnants of a stud and panel screen to the right of the cross passage, featuring two and a half lateral beams with hollow moulded chamfered edges and step and run-out stops, while other beams are axial. The proximity of a chapel suggests that this farmhouse was a residence of some significance.
