Description
The building is a malthouse and traction engine house, now disused, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of random rubble and pebbles with brick dressings, featuring steeply pitched slate roofs. The malthouse has a pyramid roof with a circular vent at the apex, while the traction engine house has a catslide roof over its central bay. The structure is part of a range of buildings that run up the hillside, with the square malthouse positioned above the hexagonal traction engine house to the north.
On the east front, the building has two storeys and a canted facade for the engine house. There is a central first-floor doorway accessed by a lateral flight of external stone steps, with a door below. Small glazed openings are located just below the eaves and on the ground floor, along with two windows on the left gable end. The right side abuts the malthouse, which features a two-light window below the eaves and a glazed opening to the left of a cambered head doorway. The interior has not been seen. This building is part of Clarke's Mill complex, which began in the late 18th century and was enlarged in the early 19th century.
