Description

The boundary wall, railings, and war memorial located to the south of the Town Hall in Lynton were constructed in 1900 and 1920. The structure features a low rubble wall with weathered stone coping, approximately 1 meter high on the left and 1.5 meters high on the right. It includes square piers topped with flat domed square cappings at each end and in two pairs at the entrance to short flights of concrete steps with quarter landings. The wall spans the width of the main building's frontage. Connecting the piers is a low railing with a scrolled balustrade.

At the upper level, flanking the steps, stands the granite war memorial, which is designed as an unfluted Doric column with a square abacus on an echinus decorated with egg-and-dart motifs, topped with a ball finial. This column rests on a square rock-faced granite plinth, which features polished panels displaying the names of those who lost their lives in the 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 wars. The memorial is further enhanced by a stylobate of three square granite steps, with polished treads and rock-faced risers, all enclosed by a low iron railing.
