Description

The war memorial, benches, walls, piers, terrace, and steps located on Hawkey's Lane in Tynemouth were constructed around 1920. The memorial features walls and piers made of Portland stone, with bronze panels in low relief. The terrace is paved with sandstone and has granite steps. The wide cenotaph has a projecting center adorned with low-relief panels depicting an angel and uniformed men, a bronze-wreathed band, and low pyramidal coping. Classical-style benches are positioned against canted walls that extend forward on either side, ending in low square piers with projecting panels facing the street. The granite steps lead up to a flagged terrace that is enclosed by walls. The panels on the canted walls are inscribed with the following texts: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED IN THE BOOK OF HONOUR TREASURED IN THE PUBLIC LIBRARY" on the left, and "THIS MONUMENT AND THE INFIRMARY EXTENSION WERE ERECTED AS THE TOWN'S WAR MEMORIAL IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE" on the right.
