Description
The memorial to Ralph Gardiner is an obelisk dated 1882, located in Tynemouth, North Shields. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and coursed squared rubble. The base is made of coursed thin rubble, supporting a single slab that holds a square ashlar plinth of the obelisk.
The plinth features inscriptions on all four sides. The north side reads: "RALPH GARDINER/CHIRTON COTTAGE/AUTHOR OF 'ENGLAND'S GRIEVANCE DISCOVERED'/1655/ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION 1882." The west side states: "A FAITHFUL SON OF FATHER TYNE" D. B. LIETCH. The south side has the inscription: "I APPEAL TO GOD AND THE WORLD" GARDINER, while the east side reads: "WHO SUFFERED COUNTLESS ILLS WHO BATTLED FOR THE TRUE AND JUST" TENNYSON.
