Description

The Hancock monument is a headstone located in the churchyard about 2 meters north of the north transept of the Church of St Mary in Sampford Spiney. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of slate. The headstone features a triple segmental top with incised borders and includes two inscription panels. At the center, there is a roundel depicting a trumpeting angel dressed in Grecian drapery, along with a small carved hand pointing to a second, lower inscription that contains verses. The monument commemorates Anne Hancock, who passed away in 1820, as well as other members of the family.
