Description

The Herding monument and an unidentified monument are located in the churchyard about 5 meters southeast of the south aisle of the Church of St Mary. The pair consists of two headstones: the Herding headstone, dating from the early 19th century, and an unidentified headstone from the late 18th century. Both are made of slate. The Herding headstone commemorates William Herding and is dated 1815. It features a segmental head and includes a valedictory verse, created by J. Toop and Son. The smaller unidentified headstone also has a segmental head and is adorned with a wavy-edged incised border, a cherub with stylised wings, and a six-line verse, but it lacks a dedication.
