Description
The Holne War Memorial is a tall granite cross located in the churchyard, just southeast of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade I listed building. It is also near other Grade II-listed structures, including a possibly late-medieval cross.
The memorial features a plain Latin cross that is octagonal in shape with short, tapered arms. This cross rises from a slim pedestal, which is set upon a three-stage plinth. The plinth is elevated by a three-stepped base, with the plinth stages being octagonal in plan and the base steps square.
The main dedicatory inscription is displayed on the front three faces of the pedestal, stating: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HOLNE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The dates 1914 – 1918 are inscribed on the upper stage of the plinth. The middle stage of the plinth, which is an older socket-stone possibly from the nearby earlier cross, bears the inscription "THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT ECCLUS 44-13," with each word on a separate face.
The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on the front three faces of the bottom plinth stage, while a later name from the Second World War is recorded on the riser of the upper step of the base, reading "1939 – 1945/ (NAME)." Additionally, an inscription on the front face of this upper step states "ERECTED BY GRATEFUL PARISHIONERS." All inscriptions are made with applied metal letters.
