Description
The Post Office is a building that was formerly one property with The Old Post Cottage, believed to have originated as a farmhouse known as 'Chubbs Farm' in the center of Dunsford village. It dates back to the late 16th century, with significant alterations made in the 20th century. The structure features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and has a thatched roof, gabled at the left end. There is a front lateral granite stack with coped set-offs and a tall shaft, as well as a left gable end stack. The rear left wing has a thatched roof with a hipped end.
Due to internal alterations, the original layout is difficult to determine, but it appears that the current building includes a hall heated by the front lateral stack, a narrow inner room to the left, and a parlour at the rear of the inner room, while The Old Post Cottage served as the service end and kitchen. The property was divided into two in 1971.
The building is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. The large front lateral stack is accompanied by an impressively tall granite chimney shaft. On the ground floor, to the right of the stack, there is a large 20th-century glazed shop door, and a second 20th-century entrance is located at the extreme left. Between the left-hand door and the stack is a three-light casement window with eight panes per light. The first floor features two two-light casements with six panes per light and a small four-pane window to the right of the stack. Inside, an oak plank and muntin screen separates the inner room from the hall. The roof space has not been inspected but may hold further interest.
