Description
Butts Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 18th century, constructed of whitewashed rendered cob with a thatched roof that has a gable at the left end. The left end features a projecting stack with a bread oven. The cottage has a two-room plan, with a hall/kitchen on the left heated by the gable end stack, and a smaller unheated room on the right. The partition between these rooms has been removed, and there is a 20th-century addition at the rear of the left-hand room. It is unclear if Butts Cottage was originally part of a single property with Cleve Cottage.
The building stands two storeys high and has an irregular two-window front. The front door is slightly to the right of center and features studs and strap hinges. The windows are small casements, with two panes per light, except for the ground floor right window, which is a two-light iron casement with old leaded panes. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel and exposed joists, with a staircase located against the rear wall of the hall/kitchen. The roof space has not been inspected. Butts Cottage is an attractive small thatched cottage that faces the road and forms a group with Cleve Cottage.
