Description

This outbuilding, located about 15 metres north-west of Kelly Farmhouse, dates back to the 17th century and was formerly a farmhouse. It is constructed of granite rubble with a layer of cob under the eaves, and is partly covered with roughcast. The roof is made of corrugated iron, and there is a large granite ashlar chimneystack at the centre of the ridge. The right-hand gable features a projecting, corbelled stack made of granite ashlar on the second storey.

The building has a three-room and through-passage plan, although the rear door has been blocked. The hall stack backs onto the passage. It is two storeys high and has a three-window front with remnants of 19th-century wooden casements. A flight of granite steps on the right gable leads to a doorway in the upper storey, which is likely a later addition.

While the interior was not inspected, a report from 1969 notes that the hall contains a double-ovolo moulded beam with scroll-stops. The fireplace features hollow-moulded stone jambs with rounded pyramid stops, and the lower room has a half-beam with straight-cut stops. Two early trusses with threaded purlins are still present, although the lower parts of the principal rafters are concealed by plaster. A 1980 report mentions a small second-storey fireplace in the right-hand gable, which is blocked, but its wooden lintel is curved on the underside, and the jambs are covered with hard grey plaster that has wide incisions to imitate masonry, a rare feature possibly dating from the mid-17th century. According to the owners, little has changed inside since these reports.
