Description

Horspit Cross is a wayside cross that has been converted into a guide stone. It is likely of late medieval origin but was modified in the 19th century. The cross is made of small, roughly hewn granite and features short arms with a truncated head. On two faces and the ends of its arms, it has the letters O (for Okehampton), N (for Newton Abbot), M (for Moretonhampstead), and B (for Bovey) carved into it. The name "Horspit" is thought to come from the field at the gate where the cross stands.
