Description
The Glebe House, formerly known as The Vicarage, is a house dating from the 18th century, with remodelling that occurred around 1831 by Elliot of Ashlawton. It is constructed of stone rubble and has plastered surfaces on the south and east fronts. The house features a thatched hipped roof with deep eaves and a thin moulding along the eaves soffit. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys.
The east front has five bays that are not quite symmetrical and includes moulded cross mullion-transom casements with leaded panes and hood moulds, dating from around 1832. The south entrance front has three bays and features a central fielded panel door with reveals. There is a cast iron verandah across the south front, adorned with ornate spandrels and a glass roof. The roof also has slate hung side and central stacks.
Inside, there is a staircase with stack balusters and wreathed handrails that are ramped after column newels. Some of the interior doors are fielded panelled and date from the 18th century. A tablet on the east front indicates that Charles Kingsley was born here in 1819, while his father was the curate-in-charge of Holne for a brief period.
