Description

The Hamlyn Memorial, located approximately 44 meters southwest of the tower of the Church of Holy Trinity in Buckfastleigh, is a memorial dedicated to Joseph Hamlyn, who died in 1864, and other members of the Hamlyn family. It was constructed around 1864 and features both polished and unpolished granite, along with cast-iron railings, in a Greek Revival style.

The memorial consists of a pedestal monument that is enclosed by contemporary cast-iron railings. The pedestal is gabled on all four sides and topped with a draped urn. It has a moulded base and plinth, with the sides adorned with inscription shields that have curled upper corners. The gables are corbelled and decorated with friezes that include a Greek key pattern, while the gables also feature sacred monograms.

The surrounding cast-iron railings are designed with cusped ogee and semi-circular rails, decorated finials, and square section corner standards that have moulded bases and finials. Historically, the Hamlyn family were woollen mill owners in Buckfastleigh and played a significant role in building the town hall and providing extensive housing for their workforce. Nearby, there is another memorial dedicated to the Callard family, who were also mill owners in Buckfastleigh.
