Description

This building, located at 1 New Street, is a shop and house dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from plastered granite stone rubble, with granite stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts, topped by a coated slate roof. The layout includes a house with living space above and a separate house behind, situated on a corner site. The shop faces High Street to the northeast, while the house faces southeast onto New Street. Access to the shop is through a doorway on New Street, and it features an end stack in the party wall with The Globe Inn on High Street. Behind the shop is a two-room plan house with an end stack in the party wall with the adjoining property at 3 New Street.

The building has three storeys. The High Street façade features a two-window arrangement above an early 20th-century shop front with a moulded fascia board. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, and the second floor has horizontal-sliding 4-pane sashes. The corner of the building is canted, and the roof is hipped. The New Street façade has an irregular three-window front with 12-pane sashes and horizontal-sliding sashes on the second floor. Both doorways have plank doors. The building is part of a group of attractive listed buildings near the Church of St Michael.
