Description
Ceylon House is a mid-19th century house located on New Street in Chagford. It is constructed from plastered granite stone rubble, featuring granite stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts and a slate roof. The house occupies a corner site, with the main block facing north-west along New Street. It has a two-room plan with a central entrance hall and staircase, and end stacks. There is also a one-room plan rear wing that has a projecting end stack at an oblique angle on the left side.
The house is two storeys tall with attics. The front plaster is lightly incised to resemble ashlar. The main block has a symmetrical three-window front, featuring 12-pane sash windows, and there are 9-pane (3/6) sashes in the two gabled half dormers in the attic. The central doorway has a four-panel door with an overlight that lacks its glazing bars, and the reveals are panelled. The rear block has a one-window front with 12-pane sashes. The roof is gable-ended to the right and hipped to the left. The interior has not been inspected. Ceylon House is part of an attractive group of listed buildings near St. Michael's Church.
