Description
No. 5 High Street is a cottage dating from the mid-17th century. It is built from plastered granite stone rubble with some sections of cob and features a granite stack topped with a 19th-century brick chimney shaft. The roof is thatched. Originally, the cottage had a one-room plan facing a narrow alley to the northwest, with an end stack on the right. A service outshot with a hayloft above was later added and converted into a kitchen in the 20th century. This cottage is part of the 17th-century development associated with the rear tenement of a house now known as Church Stile Cottage, to which it is attached, as well as Whiddons.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a two-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The doorway on the left features a 17th-century oak lintel that is chamfered with scroll-nick stops, while the door itself is a 20th-century studded plank door. The roof is hipped over the outshot on the right. Inside, the main room has a 17th-century plain chamfered crossbeam, and the joists are scratch-moulded. The fireplace is blocked by a 20th-century grate, but part of its oak lintel is still visible. The roof space is inaccessible, but the base of what are likely original A-frame trusses can be seen.
