Description
No. 71 High Street is a house that is part of a row, featuring an early 19th-century front built on earlier structures, including a 17th-century wing at the rear. The building is constructed with Flemish bond brickwork and timber-framing, topped with a slate roof. It has a 17th-century side-entry parallel plan, presenting a small and compact front that extends over Stephens Alley to the right. The house stands three storeys tall and has two windows. The upper floors have 16-pane sash windows with brick voussoirs, while the ground floor features 4-pane windows on either side of a six-panel fielded door set in a half-brick arched opening, which is topped with a plain painted fanlight. There is a similar opening leading to Stephens Alley, and a basement opening is located far left. The parapet is made of later brickwork. At the back, there is a square panel-framed wing that leads to a wide rear gable. This wing is smaller in height compared to the adjoining properties, indicating a 17th-century origin, and it may have originally been two cottages before being re-fronted. The interior has not been inspected.
