Description
The stableblock, located approximately 50 meters southwest of Witcombe Park, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed from brick and coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a red tile roof featuring stone ridge tiles. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey with a loft.
It features three stable doors set within tall basket-headed surrounds, with the upper parts glazed; one door retains its original radiating glazing bars. There are two double-width openings with timber lintels towards the right gable end, where the right-hand opening now contains a single-width stable door alongside a fixed casement with glazing bars to the left. Below the eaves, there are five shallow two-light windows. A pitching window is located at the left gable end, while a bull's-eye window with radiating glazing bars is positioned at the right gable end, facing the entrance to Witcombe Park. The interior has not been inspected. The brick front and north gable end facing Witcombe Park were clearly designed to make an impression. Some tiles were missing from the roof at the time of the last survey in February 1987.
