Description
Chandos Almshouses are almshouses dated 1573, though most of the structure is a 20th-century rebuild, with the original facade preserved. They are built from squared and coursed limestone and topped with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and features a six-window arrangement, with all windows being two-light chamfered mullion casements that include one horizontal bar, lacking drips or cills. There are three former doorways, which have been converted into two-light casements beneath four-centred chamfered heads, with the entrance now located to the right through a 20th-century extension. Above the left doorway is a cartouche displaying the Chandos arms with supporters, while the central doorway features a recessed lias panel inscribed with: "FOUNDED BY/LADY DOROTHY CHANDOS/OF/SUDELEY CASTLE ABOUT THE YEAR/.... (this was 1573)/AND .....LT BY/VOLUN .....TION." The facade presents a modest yet attractive grouping with the nearby properties in Queens Square.
