Description

The lych gate at the entrance to the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity is a timber-framed structure built in memory of Jane Unwin, who died in August 1916, as noted in the inscription: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF JANE UNWIN WHO DIED AUGUST 1916 / THIS LYCH GATE WAS ERECTED BY HER SIX CHILDREN'. The gate features random squared and dressed stone side walls and a stone slate roof. It has a gable with decorative curved bracing, an image niche containing a Madonna and child, and a crocketed canopy set within the king post of the gable. The tie-beam bears the inscription 'HER CHILDREN RISE UP AND CALL HER BLESSED'.

The entrance is wide and has a moulded 4-centred arch with pierced spandrels. The double gates are adorned with pierced panelling at the top, cast iron trellis work, and fleur de lys designs within the open sections. There are similar panels on either side of the lych gate. Additionally, two image niches with crocketed canopies house small wooden statuettes of saints. The structure features a cusped barge board with a pendant and an upright cross finial, while the opposite gable has a more ornate pierced barge board. The tie-beam below is carved with a musical stave and the words 'O rest in the lord'.
