Description

The Lodge and gate piers and wall were built around 1897-1901 as part of Badgeworth Court School, designed by F.W. Waller for J.H. Selwyn Paine. The lodge is constructed of purple-red and red brick, with brick stacks and a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and two storeys, with a jettied first floor supported by curving brackets. The ground floor features rusticated quoins. The west front, facing the drive, has a three-light casement window, a plank door with a single decorative glazed pane at the top, and a four-light metal casement above the door, with a decorative rubbed brick sill. Two ceramic shields flank the window. The north-facing gable end has a rebuilt shaped gable with a three-light metal casement, a moulded brick sill, and a rubbed and gauged head with a triple keystone; above this is a similar three-light metal casement with horizontal glazing bars and a moulded brick sill. The opposite gable end mirrors this design. A moulded eaves cornice with dentil decoration runs around the building. Twin projecting stacks flank the west side, near the door, featuring twin barley-twist shafts. A brick wall runs to the right of the north gable end, connecting to a pair of square gate piers with rusticated red brick quoins; a cast iron spear-headed gate slopes down at the centre. A short wall to the left of the gable end links to a plank gateway, also featuring rusticated quoins. The interior has not been inspected. The design shows influence from Bedford Park designers.
