Description

Wisteria Cottage, in Buckland Fields, is likely from the 18th century, incorporating reused stonework dating back to the 12th century. It was altered in the 19th century and in the 20th century, with further additions to the rear in the mid-20th century. The cottage is constructed of squared, irregular height coursed stone with a stone slate roof. The front of the building is symmetrical and three windows wide across two storeys, one room deep. It features a plinth and a central boarded door recessed between stone capitals, but without shafts. Above the door is a plain, semi-circular tympanum with a chevron and pellet moulding around the edge; the bottom has been cut away to accommodate the door head. Flanking the door are two-light stone mullioned windows on the ground floor. The first floor has similar windows on each end and a single-light window in the centre, with the inscription '1622: ADDAS & FRE' carved on the jamb. This is presumed to be reused stone. The gables have parapets, and the ashlar gable chimneys have moulded caps. Inside the left-hand room, exposed joists remain in the ceiling, alongside a heavy chamfer to the main beam and a timber lintel over the fireplace. A staircase originally stood by the chimney in the room on the right. It may have been originally a farmhouse, later altered into two cottages in the 19th century, when the doorways were fitted with cambered stone voussoirs. The 12th-century stonework is believed to have been taken from a chapel at Laverton, within the same parish.
