Description

The malt house located at the rear of 62 Church Street is a former malt house that has been converted into a store as of January 1992. It dates back to the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a timber-frame structure with English bond brickwork and a tiled roof. It is a long, two-storey range that is attached to the back of No. 62, with the ground floor situated significantly below the current ground level on both sides.

On the garden side, much of the original timber framework has been replaced with brickwork, and there are various openings, including plank doors at both the lower and upper levels. The gable facing the river, which is partly hidden by a later addition, has brick incorporated into the timber-framing and features a three-light opening with moulded wood mullions.

On the side facing Old Baptist Chapel Court, the first section of the wall is entirely made of brick, while the further section consists of square panel framing, each with one two-light opening. Two large beam ends, one measuring approximately 300 x 400mm, extend through the wall at about 1 meter above pavement level, with the right beam resting on a heavy timber plate. The wall bows out into the court, which appears to be an early occurrence.

Inside, the malt house retains an early roof structure, and the floor is supported by three very large rough beams with early joists. The lower level floor is significantly below the current ground level. This building is an early surviving example of its type, especially notable within an urban context. There is another 17th-century malt house located at the rear of 23 Barton Street.
