Description

No. 63 Church Street is a house in a row, dating from the 16th century with an early 18th-century front. It features painted brickwork and a timber-framed main structure, topped with a tile roof and a brick stack. This typical side-entry, parallel-plan timber-framed dwelling in Tewkesbury has access from an alley that runs beneath the left end of the property and was refronted in the 18th century.

The house is two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has three windows. There are two 2-light casement gabled dormers above 12-pane sash windows in face boxes. The ground floor has a continuous timber drip course and timber posts that divide the bays. The entrance to Old Baptist Chapel Court features fine double doors that have been made into a single leaf, with 12 vertical panels and a wide centre rail, all set in an 18th-century moulded surround. Access to the interior is through a plank door in a box-framed wall leading to a passage.

The right gable end has a tall brick stack, and the back of the house, above the throughway, has a 2-light 18th-century window with a transom. A deep wing includes a 3-light gabled dormer above an 18th-century two-light window with a transom, and above a wide plank door, all in large panel framing. The interior features a late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters and square newels leading to a pulvinated outer string, as well as a good stone fireplace that is reputed to be behind later panelling. The rear of the property continues to properties that face into the court.
