Description

This is a row of three chest tombs belonging to members of the Sadler family, located in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity, approximately 10 to 13 metres north of the chancel. The tombs are made of limestone and were previously enclosed by a single railing.

The first tomb, closest to the church, has inscriptions for John Sadler, a yeoman from Bentham who died in 1760, and his wife Jane, who died in 1787. It features two sunken inscription panels on the south side dedicated to John and Jane Sadler, along with two sunken oval panels adorned with spandrels decorated with single flowers, inscribed for John Sadler, Junior, who died in 1781, and his wife Mary, who died in 1701. The inscription panels on both sides are covered with a cream-coloured wash. The tomb has a moulded plinth and a sandstone capping with a moulded margin.

The second tomb, located north of the first, has an inscription for John Sadler, who died in 1796, on the south side. This inscription is on a raised circular panel with a beaded edge moulding, featuring raised foliate fleur-de-lys in each corner and recessed marginal panels decorated with hanging bell flowers and ribbon ties. On the north side, there is a raised circular inscription panel for Hannah, the wife of Joseph Sadler, who died in 1799, and for Joseph Sadler, who died in 1801. This panel also has a beaded edge moulding, with bosses in each corner and marginal panels decorated with hanging bell flowers, along with further inscriptions at the east and west ends. The tomb has a moulded plinth and capping with a moulded margin.

The third tomb, located north of the second, is dedicated to Sarah Sadler, the daughter of John and Sarah Sadler of Shurdington, who died in 1841. This monument is made of limestone and sandstone and matches the first tomb in design.
