Description

Nos 14-17 Church Row is a row of four former almshouses built for Joseph Yorke by William Burges around 1865. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, with a fishscale purple tile roof and brick stacks. They have a rectangular plan and are 1½ storeys high. The symmetrical facade features four windows, with two principal gables that project slightly at the far right and left, flanking two gabled dormers. All windows are 2 and 3-light stone-mullioned casements with glazing bars and blind trefoil heads that have ogee cusping. There are relieving arches above the ground floor windows. The doors, which are 19th-century plank style with strap hinges, are located at the far right and left, with a pair of matching doors at the center, all set within pointed surrounds. Each principal gable has a single quatrefoil towards the apex, with a heraldic shield at the center. The gable ends feature flat coping and finials shaped like the Yorke family crest, along with moulded kneelers and scalloped ridge tiles. There are two axial stacks and a catslide roof at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
