Description

Nos 1-4, known as The Palaces, are a row of four estate cottages built around 1905. They are constructed from coursed squared and finely dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and featuring red brick stacks on ashlar plinths. The cottages have an 'H'-shaped plan and are one and a half storeys high. The entrance front has four windows and hipped gables that project forward to the right and left. Each gable has five-light stone-mullioned canted bays on the ground floor, with three-light stone-mullioned segmental-headed dormers above each bay. Between the gables, there are two four-light stone-mullioned casements with hoods on the ground floor, and three-light stone-mullioned dormers above.

At the center, there are a pair of plank doors with fillets and strap hinges, set within moulded segmental-headed surrounds, and a hipped hood on heavy wooden brackets above both doors. Each return features a single similar door and hood, with a two-light stone-mullioned dormer above each door. The rear elevation has fenestration that matches the front. All windows are fitted with leaded panes. The axial stacks have composite star-shaped shafts in a 16th-century style. The gables are hipped, and the dormers have flat coping and kneelers. This row of cottages is part of a notable group of Arts and Crafts buildings on the estate. The name 'The Palaces' comes from a remark by Mrs. Eyres, who expressed surprise at having built 'palaces' for her tenants.
