Description
31 Barton Street is a house with a shop, built in the early 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork, a tile roof, and a brick stack. This tall, narrow-fronted property has three storeys and one window. The large 16-pane sash windows are set under splayed brick voussoirs, with a central fluted keystone and cornice, and stone cills. The late 19th-century shop front spans the width of the building, supported by pilasters and topped with a plain fascia, and includes a central part-glazed door. Above the first-floor window, there is a brick string course, and the parapet is capped with stone coping. The rear of the building has two narrow hipped ends, featuring paired 15-pane sashes at the first and second floors with a central mullion, and canted brick voussoirs at the first floor. To the left in Davis Alley, there is an 18th-century four-panel fielded door. The scale and design of this property indicate that it was completely rebuilt in the early 19th century on a narrow medieval plot. The interior has not been inspected.
