Description
The dovecote and adjoining gateway at Snowshill Manor date from the late 16th or 17th century for the dovecote and around 1920 for the gateway, designed by C.P. Wade. The dovecote is constructed from roughly squared, coursed stone and features a stone slate roof. The gateway has a random rubble wall with ashlar gate posts and wooden gates. The dovecote is square and does not have a loft, with gates located in one corner of the wall.
On the side facing the house, there is a boarded door with a timber lintel on the right, along with parapet gables and cross-gablet apices. A central gabled louver is positioned on the ridge, supported by timber posts with open sides. There is a window on the right return with a stone lintel in the gable, filled with a wooden 'eggcrate', and boards below for a landing platform. The right return wall to the gate features flat stone capping that sweeps up to a square ashlar pier with a moulded cap and a cavetto ball finial. A timber bar connects to a similar gate pier and wall, extending to the garden house. The double wooden gates are panelled below with bars above, leading to three semi-circular steps down to a lower level.
Inside, the dovecote has nests arranged in rows along the stone walls, with projecting strips, and the original entrance is located in the back wall. The roof has a single pair of purlins and a plank ridge. This structure forms a group with the house and garden buildings.
