Description
The Abbey Precinct wall is a late medieval structure that serves as a boundary to Abbey Court. It is constructed from rough squared and coursed limestone and sandstone. The wall runs for approximately 100 meters from the southern end of Abbey Barton, then returns for about 30 meters to a pier at Gloucester Road. From Abbey Barton, a section of the wall rises to 3.5 meters before stepping down to around 2 meters. The top of the wall is only partly coped and is heavily overgrown. Where the stone remains at full height, there are heavy saddle-back copings that are sometimes still in place. The return section of the wall varies in height and ends at a rectangular sandstone pier topped with stepped pyramidal capping. This wall is an important historical remnant from the Benedictine abbey and can also be seen in part across the road at Abbey Cottages.
