Group of Six Monuments by Hedge at South West End of Car Park

This is a group of six chest tombs located near a hedge at the south-west end of a car park in Tewkesbury. The tombs date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Starting from the northeast and moving southwest: (i) The first is an upright chest tomb with the earliest decipherable date of 1833, dedicated to Joseph Wickes. It is made of sandstone and features a flat ledger with cavetto-moulded edges on plain sides, raised panels, inset ends to the frieze and base, and is set on a moulded base. (ii) The second tomb is smaller and commemorates James Goodsall, dating to 1790. Also made of sandstone, it has a flat ledger with raised panels on the east and west sides, inset ends to the frieze and base, and a flared cavetto-mould base. It shows signs of wear in some areas. (iii) The third is a square upright chest tomb with the earliest decipherable date of 1810, also associated with Brookes/Browne from 1831. This sandstone tomb features a hollow pyramidal capping on a flat ledger with a moulded edge above the frieze, square raised panels with inset corners, and is set on a moulded base. (iv) The fourth tomb is lofty, with the earliest date of 1804, dedicated to Jane Edwards, the wife of Thomas Edwards, Mason. It is made of sandstone and has a flat ledger with moulded edges, raised panels with quadrant inset corners, decorative scrolls and rosettes, and a raised oval panel on the south end, all set on a moulded base and large raised platform. Further inscriptions include Stanley, 1816. (v) The fifth is an upright chest tomb dedicated to Samuel Johns, dating to 1805. Made of sandstone, it features a domed pyramid on a flat ledger with moulded edges above a horizontal fluted frieze, inset corners, and raised panels on the sides, all on a moulded base. (vi) The sixth tomb is upright and undated but is in a late 18th-century style, including an inscription to Robert Price, Plumber. It is made of sandstone and has a pyramidal top with a fluted edge on a flat ledger with moulded edges, a deep worn frieze, and raised side panels.
