Description
A group of twelve chest tombs and one pedestal tomb are situated within the churchyard, approximately 5 to 20 metres north of the porch to the Church of St. Cyr. Dating from the mid 17th century to the early 19th century, the monuments are constructed from limestone and sandstone and are arranged in rows running south to north and west to east.
One chest tomb, dated 1729, is constructed of limestone, featuring a lyre-ended design with a bolection moulded panel to its south side, flanked by robed mourners, and a swag panel to the north. It is finished with a cyma moulded top and base, and bears an inscription on the south side to Sarah Beard, who died in 1729. Another chest tomb, dated to the mid to late 17th century, is made of limestone and has a rectangular design with balusters forming two side panels. It exhibits an egg and dart moulded top, though the base is no longer visible. Inscriptions are illegible.
A limestone chest tomb is dated 1653, and exhibits plain sides and ends with incised panels on the south side and a chamfered top, the base being invisible. A verse and date are inscribed in serif capitals on the south side, but the name is illegible. A further mid to late 17th century limestone chest tomb is also rectangular, with balusters forming two side panels, and worn decoration to a band above the panels. It has an egg and dart moulded top and a currently unseen base, with a verse inscribed on the south side in serif capitals. A chest tomb dated 1696 is constructed from limestone, rectangular in shape with balusters to the sides, featuring a billetted moulding to the top, and an invisible base. The south side is inscribed to Elizabeth Browning, who died in 1696. Another limestone chest tomb, dated 1687, features a lyre-ended design with an elaborate carved border framing the panel on the south side, flanked by putti on pedestals, and incorporates a cyma moulded top and base. It bears an inscription on the south side to William Andrews, who died in 1687. A limestone chest tomb dated 1677 is lyre ended, with finely carved panels flanking the side inscription panels, a cyma moulded top and a cavetto base. It is inscribed on the north side to Elizabeth Clutterbooke, who died in 1677.
A limestone chest tomb dated 1696 is lyre ended with fine carving around the recessed inscription panel to the south side, with a cyma moulded top and an invisible base. It bears an inscription on the south side to Sarah Nash, who died in 1696. A further chest tomb, from 1697, is lyre ended but notably plain, with two bolection moulded panels on the south side, and features a small brass plate on the north side inscribed to William Mill, who died in 1697. A limestone chest tomb, dated 1702, has a lyre ended design with fine, well-preserved carving, including a bold wreathed oval panel on the south side, flanked by cherubs, a double cavetto top and a cyma moulded base. Inscriptions are almost illegible, but are dated 1702 on the south side. Finally, an early 18th century limestone chest tomb showcases fine carving and numerous symbols of death along with a cyma moulded top and base. It is inscribed on the north side to Judeth --------, with the date being illegible.
The pedestal tomb is dated 1810 and made of sandstone, with a rectangular shape and corner balusters. It is inscribed on the west side to John Elliott, who died in 1810.
This is an unusually high-quality group of monuments containing particularly well-preserved examples of late 17th and early 18th century monument design.
