Description
Wood Stanway Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was enlarged and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared stone with a stone slate roof. The building features a two-bay, two-and-a-half-storey main block, a single-bay, two-storey extension to the right, and a two-bay wing at the rear.
Facing the road, all the windows are mullioned, mostly with plain chamfers and no hoodmoulds. On the left side, there is a three-light ovolo-moulded window with an iron opening light, alongside another three-light window. There is a slight setback with a moulded stone feature near the first-floor level, with a cantilevering line of setback slightly to the right. The entrance has a three-panel door with fielded panels and a hoodmould above it, leading to a three-light window with an iron opening light. Above this, there are two three-light windows with iron opening lights, set back, and a two-light window that runs up into a dormer with a parapet gable.
The main block has two tall stone gables with blocked two-light windows in the attic. Above these, there is a semi-circular headed light with sunk spandrels in the apex of the gable, with the right-hand one being blind. A ridge chimney made of ashlar with a moulded cap is located on the right gable of the main block, with a similar chimney at the rear between the gables. The right end extension features a parapet gable and ridge chimney. The 17th-century block was likely built onto the end of an earlier building, which was replaced in the 19th century. This farmhouse forms a group with Wood Stanway House.
