Description
The Sarah Need Ireland monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary, approximately one metre south of the John Ireland monument. It commemorates Sarah Need Ireland, who died in 1848, along with other members of the Need Ireland family. The tomb is made of sandstone and is set on a rectangular base that rests on a stepped base, partly constructed of brick.
The design features a sarcophagus shape supported by ball feet. On the south side, there is a raised oval inscription plaque dedicated to Sarah, the wife of George Need Ireland, adorned with a swag above it. The north side has a similar inscription plaque, which includes palm leaf decoration above. At the east end of the tomb, there is a figure of a woman weeping over an urn, while the west end features a palm tree shading a fluted column draped in fabric. The capital of the column is broken off and lies beneath the tree. Additionally, there is an inscription to Caroline Need Ireland, the relict of George Need Ireland, on the rectangular base below the tomb. The upper part of the stepped base also includes a ledger for Sarah Ellis of Mitre Farm, who died in 1844.
