Description

Mill or store and house, now a single dwelling. The building dates to the 18th century, with an addition from the 19th century. The main south-facing front is in two parts. The left half is brick, and was formerly rendered or limewashed, with a mansard roof covered in concrete tiles. To the left of this is a 19th-century stable block, also with a concrete tile roof. This section has two storeys and an attic, and includes two 20th-century dormers. It features good 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, one 16-pane 19th-century sash window, and one 2-light casement with horizontal glazing bars on the ground floor. All openings are surrounded by brick voussoirs. The ground floor has a door, 6 panes wide with 4 glazed panes, set in a reveal. At the rear, on Almshouse Lane, there is an 18th-century sash window and two smaller openings. The right half of the building dates to the early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar, with a concrete tile and Welsh slate mansard roof and a stone stack with a moulded capping on the right gable. This section has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and contains a single window. It features good 16-pane sashes with broad surrounds, a 20th-century dormer, a small 2-light leaded casement, and a wide plank door. All of these elements are set within wooden lintols. The rear wall on Almshouse Lane has a wide plank door set within a wooden lintol and a basement opening in the plinth, to the right. The property is associated with the former Abbey Corn Mill, located opposite, which was demolished relatively recently.
