Description
Three Gables is a house built around 1880 by John Oakey. It features squared and coursed limestone with a high plinth and a stone slate roof, characterized by steeply weathered gable stacks resting on simple plinths. The building has a T-plan layout with three gables facing the street and is 1½ storeys tall with three windows. The windows are all reserved chamfer stone mullioned, with three-light windows on the ground floor and two-light windows in the gables. A small square fixed light is positioned beside a central plank door, which is set under a four-centred arch with a stopped drip. This structure is noted for its convincing pastiche style. John Oakey remarked that he aimed to make the new building appear as old as possible, which pleased his employer, Emma Dent.
