Description
The monument to William Barnes is located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary, approximately 2 metres north of the north-east corner of the nave. This chest tomb commemorates William Dipper Barnes, who died in 1814, along with other members of the Barnes family. It is made of sandstone and features inscriptions on both sides. The inscription on the north side is flanked by palm leaf decoration, while the south side has floral decoration with ribbon ties. There are also inscriptions at both ends of the tomb. The monument is capped with a moulded margin and is surrounded by a low cast iron railing that has cusped decoration and quatrefoil finials. There is another chest tomb immediately north of the William Barnes monument, which is now overgrown, but it is enclosed within the same railing.
