Description
A group of 10 monuments is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, up to 10 metres south-east of the chancel. This group includes a row of 8 headstones, a single headstone that is part of the row, and a chest tomb dedicated to members of the Buckle family.
The row of 8 headstones is made of limestone. Seven of these headstones date from the 18th century and share a similar design, featuring tops shaped like double scrolls and sunken inscription plaques with italic inscriptions for members of the Little family. To the right of these is a headstone for Susannah Little, who died in 1695, made of sandstone. It has a raised oval inscription plaque adorned with shallowly carved foliate scrollwork at the top. Next to this is another limestone headstone with a partially legible inscription in italics, dated 1673. To the right of this is a headstone for Alice Little, who died in 1707, also made of sandstone, featuring an oval inscription plaque with foliate scrollwork similar to that of the Susannah Little monument.
Further to the right is a segmental-headed limestone headstone with an almost illegible inscription that includes the date 1687. This inscription plaque is flanked by putti, each holding a book in one hand and raising the other hand towards two seated putti above the plaque. Approximately 2 metres to the east is a large segmental-headed headstone, which is tipping forwards, dedicated to Thomas Little and his wife Mary, with the only legible date being 1711. This headstone features a large winged cherub's head at the top, flanked by rosettes.
The chest tomb is dedicated to William Buckle of Boddington, Gent, who died in 1789. It is made of sandstone with a limestone plinth and was originally flat with a cast-iron railing. The tomb has fielded inscription plaques on all four sides, two of which have fluted friezes and two with swag decoration. The tomb is capped with a moulded design that includes a curving pyramidal upper capping stone with a finial at the top.
