Description

This listing describes a group of four headstones and two pairs of headstones located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, immediately southeast of the southeast corner of the south aisle.

The row of four headstones includes the left-hand headstone, which dates from the early 18th century and is made of sandstone, commemorating Mary Cook, the wife of William Cook. The lower part of this headstone is obscured by the ground level. To the right is an unidentified headstone from the early 18th century featuring a raised oval inscription plaque within a cartouche-like surround, with pairs of winged cherubs' heads in each upper corner. Next is the headstone of John Butt, who died in 1711, which has a sunken inscription plaque surrounded by scrollwork. Another unidentified headstone to the right dates from the late 17th to early 18th century, also featuring pairs of winged cherubs' heads at the top, with drapery swags hanging down the sides.

There are also two pairs of headstones located approximately 5 meters to the east. The left-hand headstone is made of limestone and features large incised initials 'I.B.' with foliate carving at the top. The right-hand headstone commemorates Elizabeth Butt, who died in 1670, and has a large scallop-shell motif at the center top, with intertwined tassels, rope, and foliate decoration on either side. The second pair of headstones, also about 5 meters to the east, includes a left-hand headstone that is segmental-headed with a partially legible inscription to Elizabeth, who died in 1696, and heavy drapery at the top and sides. The right-hand headstone is also segmental-headed and features a partially legible inscription in italics, with a pair of crossed palm leaf fronds above the inscription.
