Description

Town Hall. Built in 1853 and 1871. It is constructed of hard red brick with limestone dressings and a stone slate roof. The building was constructed in two phases, with the earlier section having a gable facing the street, featuring an open ground floor. The later section is set back and its main facade faces North Street, with an entrance located in the internal corner. The gabled section has a large transomed oriel window with diamond leading, supported by a heavily moulded stone corbel, above a three-bay open arcade. The arcade has iron railings and gates leading to square, chamfered piers with a heavy square abacus carrying a continuous frieze. A projecting clock, dated 1897, is mounted on brackets. The set-back wing is of a similar design, featuring a 1:2:1 oriel window and a single light over pointed doorways with brick voussoirs. A corbelled brick stack is located to the right. This building exemplifies Victorian civic pride and is important as it occupies a prominent corner in the town centre.
