Description

No. 35 High Street is a house dating to the 18th century with a core structure possibly from the 16th or 17th century. It is located within a row and features painted Flemish bond brickwork, timber framing with brick nogging, and a tile roof. The house follows a right-angle side-entry plan, with a plain frontage that conceals a throughway, and includes a lower, earlier back wing.

The building is three storeys high with a three-window front. It has 12-pane sash windows set within rendered splayed lintels that have keystones and stone sills. The ground floor contains a 19th-century shop front, featuring a recessed glazed door and, to the left, a plank door leading to the throughway. All of this is situated under a moulded cornice and plain fascia. The exterior displays three horizontal bands of brickwork and a coped parapet.

Inside, the partition to the right of the throughway is in timber framework with brick nogging, incorporating a segmental plaster vault approximately 2 metres from the front, and a deep segmental brick arch. Near the plank door, a large post remaining from earlier timber framing is visible, with a corresponding post at the rear. A heavy beam runs from front to back. The back wall of the main block is heavily framed and brick-nogged. The gabled back wing is constructed in square panel framing with brick, extending two storeys with an attic. The interior was not inspected at the time of listing.
