Description

The Britannia Inn is an inn dating from the mid to late 18th century. It features painted Flemish bond brickwork, a tile roof, and brick stacks. This corner property extends to Smiths Lane and has a hipped roof on the front block. It stands three storeys high with a basement and has three windows. The windows consist of 9-pane sashes above 12-pane sashes, all set within brick voussoirs and stone cills. The ground floor, which has channelled rendering, includes a 20th-century window flanking a central recessed door, along with a small plinth. There is pavement access to the basement. Above the first floor, there is a three-course brick band, and a deep brick stack is located at the left eaves. The return front has three bays, featuring two blind openings on the first and second floors and one 20th-century light. The first floor windows have segmental heads. The channelled ground floor contains various 20th-century lights and a door, all framed in plat-band raised surrounds. To the right, there is a small one-storey wing. The back wall is primarily in plain brickwork, with one 20th-century window at the second floor. The interior was only inspected on the ground floor and basement. The basement is accessed by a typical 'Tewkesbury' staircase with winders made of brick and timber nosings, while the ground floor is entirely of 20th-century construction.
